Parent Teacher Conferences

I always look forward to Parent Teacher Conferences because I am able to share such valuable information with my parents, but more importantly I am able to learn so much more about each individual child. Fifth graders are invited and encouraged to attend their scheduled meeting with me and their parents. I like to watch the interaction between the parents and their child, but especially enjoy watching the children facilitate their own conference. I feel the student-parent-teacher connection is extremely vital in order for the child to have a successful year. In my opinion, we don't really have many opportunities to meet with the parents...so conferences are a time to really listen to the parents concerns and share strengths about their child as well as areas of concern. After meeting with the parents, the CHALLENGING work really begins because we have common goals to focus on.

  1. I could not agree with your more! We also have student-led conferences and it is always amazing to me to see how the student views their year versus the teacher's opinion. Student led-conferences start taking place in grades 4-6 at my school. We have conferences in two weeks. We have three days where school dismisses at 12:00 and then the conferences take place till 3:00. Hope all of your conferences go well!

  2. Carolyn I agree with you about meeting parents at conference time or anytime. I only see a few parents at conferences because most parents feel that the specials(music, p.e., and art) are not as important as the core subjects. I feel that if it wasn't for the specials, most students would not be motivated to attend school at all. I love the parents who want their kids to be successful in every class, and stop by just to see if there kids are during what is required of them in every subject.

  3. Carl, how sad! I feel the specials classes are just as important as the core classes and a lot of children look forward to participating in these classes. I loved music class in elementary school and I participated in band during my middle and high school years. I made life long friends in these classes and these classes encouraged me to make good choices and stay out of trouble.
